3. Fam-trip on June 06, 2008

Fam-trip casts anchor at the Creative Quai

In order to be at the fore when it comes to the competition of the congress centres, the KONGRESSINITIATIVE MS has extended invitations for the third fam-trip. Around 70 professors from Münster’s universities took the opportunity to get to know the strong points of the conference location and the service of the KONGRESSINITIATIVE MS. The guests of this year’s fam-trip got to breath some port air. The balance sheet was absolutely positive; especially the Kreativkai could score as a “conference district”.

After the prelude in the Messe und Congress Centrum Halle Münsterland, the next station was the Wolfgang Borchert Theater where Bernadette Spinnen, director for Münster Marketing, presented the service of the KONGRESSINITIATIVE MS. A guided tour around the municipal exhibition hall Contemporary Art Münster with director Dr. Gail Kirkpatrick, a side trip to the Osmo-Hallen, and a visit to "Heaven" made the walk about the port perfect.

During the fam-trip, the virtues of the convention town were presented based on a mix of information, culture, and hospitality. International reachability via the Muenster Osnabrueck International Airport (FMO), good conference facilities, cultural attractions for supporting programmes and, first and foremost, a sound organisational infrastructure provided by the KONGRESSINITIATIVE MS. It is an association of the Wirtschaftsförderung, Aktion Münsterland, Stadtwerke Münster, Messe und Congress Centrum Halle Münsterland, DEHOGA, IHK Nord Westfalen (Chamber of Industry and Commerce), the University of Münster, Münster Univerity of Applied Sciences, FMO and Münster Marketing.

It is the intention of the partners to work hand in hand in the acquisition and execution of conferences and to make the convention centre fit for the future. Three novel service elements are projected for 2009, including the “Welcome! Ticket" for trips free of charge using the municipal public transport system, the event ticket of the Deutsche Bahn offering low-priced tariffs and a free shuttle service between the Muenster Osnabrueck International Airport and the convention location in Münster.

In 2008, Münster Marketing’s calendar is filled with 60 conferences drawing 18,700 attendees. The spectrum of subjects ranges from the 23rd International Polar Conference through the "Münster University International Model United Nations", where students from all over the world simulate the activities of the UNO in a management game, up to the architectural convention with 2,500 members. According to assumptions by the Deutsches Wirtschaftswissenschaftliches Institut für Fremdenverkehr (dwif), overnight guests spend EUR 138 daily on average. Taking this figure as a basis, this portion of the conference tourism earns Münster a gross turnover of around EUR 2.5 million.

Several important conferences are already foreseeable for the year 2009. Among others, the International Exhibition of Permanent-Way Technology and the trade fair Filling Station and the Middle Class will make for fully booked hotels in Münster and the surroundings.
